Catherine A. Van Horn practices in the area of commercial litigation, media/first amendment law and intellectual property law, including trademark and copyright counseling, licensing, registration and litigation, and TTAB and UDRP proceedings. Prior to joining the firm, Ms. Van Horn was a partner in the Chicago law firm of Mandell Menkes LLC.
Ms. Van Horn is “AV” rated by Martindale Hubble. She is a member of the American Bar Association (“ABA”) Litigation, Intellectual Property Law and Torts Trial and Insurance Practice (“TTIPS”) Sections; the Communications Law Forum; the Women in Communications Law, First Amendment and Media Law, Intellectual Property Law and Trial Practices Committees; and the TTIPS Media, Privacy and Defamation Law Committee. Ms. Van Horn serves as Chair of the Intellectual Property Law Section’s Trademark Litigation Committee and is the Miami Regional Representative for the Women in Communications Law Committee. She was recently appointed to the Florida State Bar's Media & Communications Law Committee.
Ms. Van Horn is a past member of the Business Law Subcommittee on Software Contracting, the Unfair Competition/Trade Identity Committee Subcommittee on Internet and Domain Name Registration, the Section of Science and Technology Law Subcommittee on Trademark Fair Use, and the Illinois State and Chicago Bar Associations.
Ms. Van Horn authored “Defamation Based Solely on Tone of Voice,” in 1999 for Communications Lawyer magazine Vol. 16, No. 4, “Reporters’ Privilege: From Government Leaks to Shield Laws” in the ABA’s 2010 Annual Review of First Amendment law and co-authored “Recent Developments in Media, Privacy, and Defamation Law,” published in the Tort Trial & Insurance Practice Law Journal, Vol. 45, No. 2. She has lectured on "Internet and the Law: Considering the Issues of Privacy, Censorship, and Copyrights,” at DePaul University in Chicago.
Ms. Van Horn is a member of the Florida and Illinois Bars and is admitted to practice in the United States District Courts for the Southern District of Florida and the Northern District of Illinois, and the United States Courts of Appeals for the Third, Seventh, Eighth and Federal Circuits. Ms. Van Horn earned her Juris Doctor from the University of Chicago Law School, where she was a Law Review editor. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism and political science from Indiana University.
