Olson Brings Unique, Sought-After Expertise to Firm
MIAMI – January 13, 2021 – Genovese Joblove & Battista, P.A. (GJB) is proud to announce that former U.S. Bankruptcy Judge John K. Olson has joined the firm as a partner.
Olson served a 14-year term as a U.S. Bankruptcy Judge for the Southern District of Florida in Fort Lauderdale beginning in February 2006. He served the Court with distinction before retiring in February 2020.
While serving as a bankruptcy judge, Olson frequently conducted judicial settlement conferences at which he served as a mediator in cases pending before other judges. In addition to assisting GJB clients in complex restructuring and insolvency matters, he will act as a mediator or arbitrator, helping parties resolve disputes out of court either before or during litigation.
“I enjoyed my time on the bench and handled matters fairly and efficiently. I hope to bring my experience and skills to my practice with GJB. I have known the firm’s lawyers for decades and worked with many of them before I went on the bench and had many opportunities to observe their practice before me in court. They are fine lawyers and good people. I am delighted to join the GJB family,” said Olson.
Prior to joining the bench, Olson was a shareholder at law firm Stearns Weaver Miller for 18 years, based in Tampa, Fla., where he was a director of the firm, a member of its executive committee, and head of the firm’s bankruptcy practice. During that time, he led significant representations of debtors, creditors’ committees, trustees, examiners, and both secured and unsecured creditors.
Added GJB shareholder Paul J. Battista: “We are truly honored and fortunate to have such an esteemed jurist and bankruptcy professional of John’s stature join the firm. His extensive knowledge and legal experience will bolster the firm’s restructuring, insolvency, and receivership practices and will be a tremendous asset to our clients.”
Olson is a distinguished leader in the legal profession. He is a former chair of the Business Law Section of The Florida Bar, and has for many years, been active in the Business Law Section of the American Bar Association. He is also a member of the Section’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee and has been chair of many substantive law committees of the Business Bankruptcy Committee. Additionally, he is a contributing author and editor for the BNA Bloomberg Law Bankruptcy Treatise and is a liaison from the American Bar Association to the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges.
Olson was admitted to The Florida Bar in 1975 and received his Juris Doctor from Boston College Law School, where he was on the Law Review. He graduated from Harvard College in 1971 with a Bachelor of Arts degree, magna cum laude, in History.
